Esmée Lacle, associate of Imagine IC, Amsterdam Southeast.

Imagine IC is a young organisation which expresses the culture and identity of migrants in the Netherlands. Imagine IC stimulates migrants to visualise their own personal story and to present it to a broad audience Esmée Lacle will present the project Story catcher, recently produced by Imagine IC. The website Story catcher presents the stories of people from the Moluccan islands and the Dutch East Indies who react to historical film fragments.

’When disembarking it turned out that most women, most likely out of female vanity, still preferred to wear the cotton sarong and the ‘baatjes’ above the warm track-suit our government had provided for them in Port Saїd. The small children left the ship wearing all sorts of mismatched clothing’

This is how the Polygon-news of March the 20th 1951 reported about the arrival of

‘The Ambonese’ on the ship the Atlantis in Rotterdam. People from the Moluccan islands would have reported the landing quite differently. It is these observations that Imagine IC is searching.

Misja Immink is an artist who lives in Rotterdam. Misja Immink fuses fiction with reality in his collection of self proclaimed poetic establishments and organisations. These organisations concern themselves with doubt, adoration, boredom and undecided or otherwise indistinct human business. They have their own structure, with documentation of specific actions that took place, access-passes and reports. Through time, these organisations have developed their own philosophies, they become more real the longer they are allowed to mature. His most famous institute at the moment is Team Imminko.

Team Imminko is a football team from Rotterdam that is a symbol for cultural collaboration. The team consists of gentlemen between 18 and 45; all have different nationalities and backgrounds. Their sporting adversaries are from all different nationalities; with their games they raise money for Stichting Vluchtelingenwerk Nederland, an organisation that helps refugees.

Jonas Staal is an artist who works in Rotterdam. In his works Staal asks context related questions concerning our notion of identity. According to Jonas Staal, identity is not an unyielding fact, but will develop in relation to its background (history). His aim is to develop an art form that will directly relate to reality. He wants his artwork to instantly function as art, without having to be recognised as such. Jonas Staal converts contemporary themes and phenomena into visual additions which he will test in an (unsuspected) encounter with his public. He will refrain from giving an opinion about these issues but he will investigate their performance, rather then their apparent contents. He examines the correlation between physical, individual experience and those representations of experience that come to us through the media. He reflects on the relation between occurrence and representation. His art manifests itself in the public zone. Lately, Jonas Staal has been in the news because of a law case concerning his work ‘The Geert Wilders werken’

Katarina Zdjelar is an artist born in Belgrade, Serbia who lives and works in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Katarina Zdjelar is interested in spoken language. She is investigating how the physical act of spoken language differs from the encrypted version that is written language. In her work, she concentrates on the significance of language as part of ones cultural identity. The mother tongue will function as a mobile ‘home’; it will set you apart from the rest and makes you aware of your position within society. When speaking a different language, ‘noise’ arises: hesitation, an obvious accent, articulation and involuntary use of transferred idiom and proverbs. Katharina Zdjelar does research to how cultural identity is affected when two different languages collide.
